![]() What did you set out to accomplish that Anita's memoir or Jill Abramson and Jane Mayer's formidable book Strange Justice didn't? You know, sexual harassment was never really discussed before Anita's testimony, officially or publicly. Well, it makes sense that anyone who wasn't a certain age in 1991 would know about the hearings, but that's who should see this film! When I set out to make the film, I wanted to look at the impact 20 years later. Speaking of cultural zeitgeist, there are so many people who don't know who Anita Hill is. I mean the idea of being a filmmaker was not exactly in their cultural zeitgeist. My mom helped him and raised kids, but my parents were immigrants. I'm curious if your folks were artists or artistic? Your husband, Terry Sanders, your daughter Jessica, and your brother-in-law have all won Oscars. The Senate Judiciary Committee members grilled Hill for nine hours, asking her to repeat salacious details, like how Thomas referred to his penis as Long Duck Dong, but did not call experts or corroborating witnesses. In Anita: Speaking Truth to Power, Mock chronicles how a black female professor testified in 1991 before 14 white male Senators, that she had faced sexual harassment by her former boss (and then Supreme Court Justice nominee) Clarence Thomas. Mock's forte is profiling individuals who make the world a better place, be it Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, G-Dog, a Jesuit Priest who created Home Boys, a now legendary gang rehab program, or, her latest subject, Anita Hill, who forced Congress to address sexual harassment in the work place. ![]() After 25 years, however, the financial and logistical challenges of indie filmmaking haven't left her jaded. ![]() Even with a heap of Oscar, Emmy, and Sundance awards, documentary filmmaker Frieda Lee Mock says she still hustles for funding. ![]() The first is that they met behind closed doors with the ACC and got the buyback credit at the end of the year changed from their wholesale rate (The average of what it cost them to produce electricity) to the cost of their natural gas production. Under these black clouds, Dreesen fired off his ill-conceived, late-night email to solar customers, informing them that "We discovered two separate items that APS has not been forthcoming about and thev do effect YOU." Click here to read the letter, which we found on the corporation commission's website. The five-Republican-member commission plans public hearings on the matter before they vote on the APS proposals. In the other corner are solar firms like SolarCity, which - through hired gun Jason Rose - have portrayed APS as a benighted monopoly bent on killing off a perceived competitor. ![]() Last month, APS put proposals before the commission that try to account for the perceived loss. The utility wants to pay less for "net metering," arguing that solar users aren't paying enough for the services and equipment they use. An Epic Battle Between Solar Firms and Power Utilities Could Leave One Side UnpluggedĪs New Times covered in a feature article last month, APS and solar companies have been slugging it out in recent weeks over the amount of money APS pays to owners of grid-tied solar panels for the electricity they produce. on July 31, records show, when SolarCity sales consultant Doyle Dreesen sent a breathless email to an unknown number of customers that blasted Arizona Public Service and the corporation commission. Average dress size dropped from 5.2 to 3.7. Waist size dropped from 24.7 inches to 23.6 inches , and hips shrank from 34.9 inches to 34.4 inches. The study found that bust measurements dropped from 32.9 inches in the 1990s, to 32 inches 20 years later. The research relied on a directory of fashion models that did not include weight but did include measurements, and looked at the change over three-year periods starting in 1995 and ending in 2018 Though that hasn't stopped some from trying. The study notes a dramatic recent rise in cosmetic surgery, "with buttock and lower body lift increasing by 4295% and 256%, respectively, since 2000." In 2019, with ratings low, Victoria's Secret canceled the fashion show, saying it needed to evolve and be rethought for a new media era.Īs a cosmetic dermatologist, Vashi focuses on enhancing people's looks, she says, but she also hopes people recognize that Victoria's Secret models, "have bodies that are just not attainable by an average person." Victoria's Secret did not reply to an emailed request for comment. "These findings represent an ideal of beauty that continuously moves further away from the characteristics of the average American woman," says a news release accompanying the study. "Overall, these models became slimmer and their dress size decreased," says Vashi. "The ratio stayed the same, but each one of those measurements did decrease."Īnd as Victoria's Secret models got thinner, the average American woman's measurements grew - with the average woman now at least a size 16.Ĭoncern over that rising disparity comes across in the research paper's title, which begins: " Unattainable Standards of Beauty." She found that the 0.7 ratio - roughly a 24-inch waist divided by 35-inch hips - did hold true for the models, a nice confirmation of her hypothesis.īut the results from other measures the team examined were surprising - and, she says, concerning. So Vashi, an assistant professor of dermatology at Boston University and director of the Cosmetic and Laser Center at Boston Medical Center , and colleagues analyzed the measurements of models who walked the runway at the now-defunct fashion show over 23 years, from 1995 to 2018. She was curious, she says, to see whether previous cross-cultural findings that men tend to prefer women with a 0.7 waist-to-hip ratio would hold true across time in a group known for beauty - models in the famed Victoria's Secret fashion show. Neelam Vashi says she is fascinated by women's waist-to-hip ratio, the hourglass curve from the narrowest point of the waist to the widest point of the hips. ![]() (Evan Agostini/AP) This article is more than 3 years old.Ĭosmetic dermatologist Dr. Models walk the runway in the final Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2018. A city police spokesman in Nelson said that Cottonwood Creek had caused between 15 and 20 homes to be evacuated with several others packed and prepared to move if necessary. Eight homes and a service station in the City are flooded, at least partially. Two large gas tanks were washed away from the service station on Ymir Road with an unconfirmed figure of 900 gallons of gas inside. Volunteer crews totalling 1,500 fought the flood, mostly with sandbags, trying to keep the creek flowing close to its normal channel. The lower bridge at Duhamel creek, below the main highway at Six Mile Road, was nearly lost but hard work, sandbagging and two cats had kept it in place. The flood was caused by nearly two inches of warm rain which fell in the area. Any men available are asked to contact Manpower or city police to see if they are needed. I called 45 King and then passed the phone to Jay.įollowing the December 4, 1997, show at Madison Square Garden, where his set was cut to less than 20 minutes, Jay Z quit the No Way Out tour. Kid Capri: Jay rolled up to me like, “Yo, what’s that?” I said, “You like that?” “Yeahhh.” “You want it?” “Yeahhh.” Right there I called 45 King, while I was onstage, with the crowd watching me, and with the spotlight on me. By the third or fourth show, Jay Z rolled up and asked me where I got that from. I knew from the reaction I was getting that it was really working. Kid Capri: When I came out for my second set of the night on the No Way Out tour, I would start with “Hard Knock Life.” Fans were running up saying, “How did you get the Annie song behind the drums?” It was mostly white people coming up to me. You know who I’m talking about? Joe Clair, there you go. ![]() I sent the beat to a few people - Joe Torres, the actor, the one from BET. It turned into “Don’t fuck with Mark, because he is out of his mind and we don’t like his music anymore.” I’ll be honest with you: Latifah had the beat first. From 1990 to 1991, I was out of my fucking mind. The 45 King: At that time, nobody wanted to fuck with me. But first I wanted to test it in the arenas and get a feel from it. I wanted to use the beat for my album Soundtrack to the Streets. Kid Capri (DJ/producer): The 45 King put it on a plate and gave it to me. The 45 King (producer, “Hard Knock Life”): That’s what I do: I find stuff, then I put drums under it and come up with a bass line. Part of the choreography was us being near the front of the stage, on our hands and knees, with the scrub brushes and the bucket, and we would always engage with the audience and break the fourth wall a little bit. Instead he heard the kids singing, “It’s the hard knock life for us.”ĭanielle Brisebois 2 (actress/singer Molly, original Broadway cast of Annie): We had a lot of fun doing “It’s the Hard Knock Life” every night. A few days later he bought the Annie soundtrack for a quarter from a Salvation Army store. One night, Mark “The 45 King” James, the producer behind “The 900 Number” and Queen Latifah’s “Ladies First,” saw the commercial and thought the show tune could work as a hip-hop record. “It’s the Hard Knock Life” was featured in the ads. Throughout 1997, commercials promoting the 20 th anniversary Broadway revival of Annie ran on television. With the Annie remake in theaters Friday, this is the story of Jay Z’s “Hard Knock Life,” based on original interviews and excerpts from Vibe, Jay Z’s book Decoded, and a Swedish documentary about the making of the song. He had just released his sophomore album, In My Lifetime, Vol. ![]() Most astonishing of all, Jay Z, the man now considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, was not a star.
